    Summer RE Class (for children up to age 10)

    This first summer session helps children become aware of their capacity to "do small things with great love." They learn that they are each an instrument of love in the world as they get to know each other and discover the strength of the word "love" in this beloved community.

    Building the World We Dream About

    The first in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. To truly be the "antiracist/multicultural faith community" we wish to be, we must first examine our own attitudes towards racial, ethnic, cultural, genderqueer, and other minorities.  In a respectful, thoughtful and supportive conversation, participants will explore Dr. Lee Knefelkamp's work that defines "mattering" and "marginality" in the context of their own experiences and those of others.

    Summer RE Class (for children up to age 10)

    This session explores how every friendship is surrounded in love. To make a friend is to discover ways we are alike. To meet new people and look first for how we are alike, rather than different, can be a challenge.

    Whenever we are in relationship with others, we have an opportunity to affirm the inherent worth and dignity of each person and to better understand ourselves.

    Building the World We Dream About

    The second in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. Participants explore experiences of people marginalized by race, ethnicity, or gender identity in their faith communities using “serial testimony” to promote deep listening and thoughtful discussion.

    We believe all people should be treated fairly, without racial, cultural, socioeconomic or territorial boundaries—the UU second Principle. This session embraces all families on their daily journeys into beloved community: Love without boundaries.

    The third in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. Viewing the world through the lens of another’s racial, ethnic or genderqueer identity can move us toward "multicultural competencies” and noticing systemic advantages and disadvantages.

    The fourth in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. The reality of unearned advantage can trigger anger, shame, denial, resistance; but understanding is foundational in dismantling it. Explore how privilege can be used for the common good.

    Summer RE Class (for children up to age 10)

    The session focuses on the third Principle, "Everyone is accepted with love and compassion in our congregation." One of the unique characteristics of Unitarian Universalism is the diversity of beliefs within our congregations. We strive to make everyone feel welcome and accepted regardless of their beliefs. The children will learn and demonstrate acceptance and compassion to everyone through story, art, games, and meditation.

    The fifth in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. Explore how racism leads to economic, cultural, sociological, and political outcomes independent of the intentions of individuals in the culturally dominant group.

    The theme of this session is "Our search for beliefs comes from sources of love." Children learn that Unitarian Universalists have the freedom to build our own theology; we affirm our UU Principles, yet we are not required to believe any one thing.

    Summer RE Class (for children up to age 10)

    The theme of this session is "This is a place where you are loved and your opinions matter." The children learn that UU congregations intentionally make space for everyone's point of view on matters concerning the congregation as well as on issues that affect the community and the whole world. The story, based on a Sioux legend, presents a way to assure everyone is heard in a group conversation. Participants make individual talking sticks to use in this group and at home. They think about loving and respecting all people that they encounter.

    The seventh in a series of stand-alone conversations in our summer discussion format. Consider how “White identity” is imposed by the larger society. How does “White privilege” apply even for “White people” who don't think of themselves as “White?”

    Summer RE Class (for children up to age 10)

    This session reinforces our sixth Principle, "We believe in working for a peaceful, fair, and free world." Children explore ways to ensure everyone has the basic human needs of clothing, food, shelter, and love. Beginning with the beloved communities in their lives, participants explore what it means to work toward a peaceful, fair and free world. They gain confidence in their ability to make a difference in the world as Unitarian Universalists acting on our sixth Principle.

    This session engages children to experience how and why their behavior choices matter.

    In role play and discussion, avoid judgment of a person when talking about unwise behavior. People are not "bad," though behavior can be. Affirm positive behavior choices.

    A worship service for racial healing and reconciliation to acknowledge and affirm the important spiritual work done through the summer discussion series.

    This session encourages our children to care for the earth and helps them understand that our actions affect every living thing on our planet, including ourselves. The session theme is "We are connected to the earth in love."

    When we show love for our planet by advocating protection of animal habitats or trees, we are living our seventh Unitarian Universalist Principle.

    Building the World We Dream About

    The final discussion in our summer series of conversations on multiculturalism and inclusion. The facilitator will present hypothetical “case studies” and participants will use the fruit of our discussions to propose responses to improve future antiracist, multicultural, and inclusive outcomes in our own community.

    This session reviews the Principles and celebrates their application in all the Beloved Communities participants can name. Home, school, neighborhood, and faith community all provide places for children to affirm their Unitarian Universalist identity and faith by acting in accord with the Principles.
