Chalica 4, Advent 4, Solstice, HumanLight, Christmas - As we celebrate so many holidays and holydays this week, we remember and celebrate the Fourth Principle of Unitarian Universalism.  This principle:  "A free and responsible search for truth and meaning" calls us not to be isolated and self-centered, believing that our single perspective trumps all others, but rather to be humble, to be open to the great mysteries of truth and meaning that life offers. And those mysteries may speak to us through our own intuition and experience—but also through tradition, community, conflict, nature, and relationships.

As we begin our seven week observance of Chalica - a Unitarian Universalist seasonal celebration which both recalls and challenges us to act on our Seven Principles (or Promises, as we call then in Children's Religious Education), we consider what each of us can do each day to embody, enact, and evangelize about the values that are at the heart of our liberal faith.

Each person's relationship with another person or group changes over time.  So it is with a person's relationship with our Fellowship.  Chaplain James Gibbons Walker outlines a "spectrum of faithful relationship" and asks, "Where do you find yourself?"  "Is it an OK place - or would you like it to be different?"  "What can help to get you to the place you would like to be?"

This year we will highlight the empowerment of refugees and displaced people. One of UUSC’s major focuses is serving the people who are most overlooked or discriminated against in the midst of humanitarian crises such as forced migration, large-scale conflicts, genocide, and natural disasters. As UUSC celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, we’ll look back to our origin: Martha and Rev. Waitstill Sharp helping European refugees escape persecution during World War II.
