In 1993, nine people formed the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Southern Maryland (UUFSM). The Fellowship currently has about 40 members and friends and about 10 children, who come from St. Mary's, Calvert, and Charles Counties.
The Fellowship is a shared-ministry congregation, where people support each other and the Fellowship. We are members of the Church of the Larger Fellowship, and every month one of our members shares a sermon written by a minister. We also invite guest speakers, and our members take turns in leading discussions, reflections, and celebrations. We are blessed to have a member who is studying for the ministry, Chaplain James Gibbons Walker. He frequently leads the service, offers pastoral counseling, and shares his wit, wisdom, and warmth.
UUFSM offers Sunday worship services at 10:30 in the morning, religious education classes for our children, a youth group, discussion groups and an adult religious education program, a nature-focused worship group, an active social justice committee, and social activities.
In addition to sharing personal spiritual journeys, members and friends of UUFSM enjoy traditions such as the Flower Communion in June, the Water Ceremony in September, our Anniversary Celebration in March, and a Labor Day picnic.
The UUFSM has full membership and participation in the national Unitarian Universalist Association headquartered in Boston and in the UU Joseph Priestley District, and is active with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and our district's Chalice Lighters.
