The 1940 Services of Religion for use in the Churches of the Free Spirit (the first joint Unitarian and Universalist hymnal) contains the following prayer:  We remember our enemies, if there be any who have injured us or cherish hatred against us.  We pray thee to turn their hearts and ours, that we may live peaceably with all [people].  If there be any whom we have wronged, move us to make amends and seek forgiveness at their hands, and may we freely forgive all who have wronged us.

Today, we consider what forgiveness can entail, among ourselves and in our community and nation.

Our nation needs us.  We need each other.

What can we do, individually and together, "to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, ... promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity"?

Chalica 4, Advent 4, Solstice, HumanLight, Christmas, Hannukah - As we celebrate so many holidays and holydays this week, we remember and celebrate the Fourth Principle of Unitarian Universalism.  This principle:  "A free and responsible search for truth and meaning" calls us not to be isolated and self-centered, believing that our single perspective trumps all others, but rather to be humble, to be open to the great mysteries of truth and meaning that life offers. And those mysteries may speak to us through our own intuition and experience—but also through tradition, community, conflict, nature, and relationships.
